Portals are newspapers or magazines on the web. Like real magazines they vie for your attention and their goal is to persuade you to bookmark them as your HOME page.

Many search engines have now become big, bloated and overstuffed information sources and news feeds. Some like Excite offer free SMS messaging to entice you in. Others like AltaVista have gone back to their roots with stripped down versions of their search facility. Raging Search is what AltaVista used to be.
